Crafters in 49 states might want to stock up on supplies as Joann, the well-known fabric and craft store chain, is preparing to close more than half of its locations across the U.S.

On Wednesday, the retailer confirmed to USA TODAY that it plans to shut down around 500 out of its 850 stores nationwide. This announcement follows Joann’s second bankruptcy filing in less than a year—after initially filing for bankruptcy and later going private in March 2024.

In its statement, Joann said it is working on “right-sizing its store footprint.”

“This was an incredibly difficult decision, given the significant impact we know it will have on our team members, customers, and the communities we serve,” the company stated. “A thorough analysis of store performance and the company’s future strategic positioning determined which locations will continue operating as usual at this time.”

While Joann has not publicly released an official list of affected stores, it has submitted a list to the court as part of its Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings. According to court documents, 533 stores in 49 states are slated for closure.

Which States Are Most Affected?

As per the filings, over 500 Joann stores will shut down across 49 states, with Hawaii being the only exception.

The states with the highest number of closures include:

  • California – 61 stores
  • Florida – 36 stores
  • Michigan – 33 stores
  • Ohio – 33 stores
  • Pennsylvania – 33 stores
  • Illinois – 26 stores
  • New York – 24 stores
  • Washington – 21 stores
  • Indiana – 20 stores
  • Massachusetts – 19 stores

This wave of closures marks a significant shift for Joann, impacting both employees and long-time customers who rely on the chain for fabric, craft materials, and sewing supplies.

As the company undergoes restructuring, shoppers may want to keep an eye out for store-closing sales and potential discounts before these locations shut their doors for good.
