A New Dawn for Canada as Mark Carney Elected Prime Minister

Mark Carney has led the Liberal Party to victory in Canada’s federal elections, signaling a major political shift fueled by U.S. President Donald Trump’s threats to annex Canada and an escalating trade war.

On Tuesday, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation projected that Pierre Poilievre, the Conservative Party leader and Carney’s main rival, would lose his seat in Parliament.

Poilievre’s defeat in his Ottawa riding dealt a major blow to his political future. Just months ago, he seemed poised to become Canada’s next Prime Minister, with hopes of leading the Conservatives back to power after a decade in opposition.

However, Trump’s aggressive trade war with Canada—and his shocking suggestion that Canada become the 51st U.S. state—infuriated Canadian voters and dramatically swung momentum in Carney’s favor.

The Liberal Party is now expected to win more seats than the Conservatives in the 343-member House of Commons. Still, it remains unclear whether they will secure a majority of 172 seats or need support from smaller parties to govern.

Canada’s elections authority temporarily paused the counting of special ballots from voters outside their home ridings, delaying final results until later Tuesday.

In his victory speech, Carney emphasized the importance of national unity in the face of American threats.

“We have survived the shock of American betrayal, but we must never forget the lessons,” Carney said.

He declared that the long-standing and fruitful relationship between Canada and the United States is now over.

“As I warned months ago, America wants our land, our resources, our water—our country. These are not idle threats. President Trump is trying to break us so that America can own us. That will never happen.”

Carney concluded: “But we must also accept the reality that our world has fundamentally changed.”
