Manuel Neuer: Germany’s goalkeeper has announced his retirement from international football.
The 2014 World Cup winner played in 124 matches for Germany, with his final appearance coming last month in the quarterfinals of the 2024 European Championship, where Germany was defeated by Spain.
The 38-year-old Bayern Munich goalkeeper made his international debut in 2009 and competed in eight major tournaments. Neuer led Germany to a World Cup victory over Argentina in Brazil and was appointed captain ahead of the 2018 World Cup, a role he held until Ilkay Gundogan replaced him earlier this year.
Gundogan also announced his retirement from international football this week, following the retirement announcement of midfielder Toni Kroos after the European Championship held in Germany.
Despite retiring from international football, Neuer will continue his club career with Bayern Munich, having extended his contract last year to stay with the team until 2025.
